Aluminum Printed Circuit Boards are also named as Aluminum clad, aluminum base, Metal clad printed Circuit Board (MCPCB), metal base PCBs, Insulated Metal Substrate(IMS or IMPCB), Thermally conductive PCBs.
These PCBs use standard FR-4 as insulating component and aluminum core as their base material. One of the most beneficial properties of aluminum PCBs is that they consist of a thermal clad layer, which helps in heat dissipation. This helps cool down the components that are mounted on the board, thus enhancing the overall product performance.

Materials :
Flexible Aluminum PCBs, These PCBs are used widely, and considered as the latest development in the IMS (Insulated Metal Substrates) materials. These materials feature a polyimide resin system with ceramic fillers which provides excellent electrical insulation, flexibility and of course thermal conductivity. Aluminum PCBs are capable of bending, and ensure better stability.
Hybrid Aluminum PCBs, In a 'Hybrid' IMS construction a "Sub-assembly" of a non-thermal material is processed independently and then bonded to the aluminum base with thermal materials. The common construction is a two-Layer or four-Layer Sub-assembly made from conventional FR-4. Bonding this layer to an aluminum base. This results in heat dissipation, and increased rigidity, which acts as a heat shield.
Through-hole Aluminum PCBs, In the most complex constructions a layer of aluminum can form a 'Core' of a multilayer thermal construction aluminum is pre-drilled, and the drilled hole is back-filled with dielectric material. The aluminum is then sent for the lamination process, where thermal bonding materials are used to laminate both the sides of the aluminum. Once laminated, the completed assembly is thru-drilled similar to a conventional multilayer PCB. For providing electrical insulation, these plated through-holes are made to pass through clearances in the metal.
Multilayer Aluminum PCBs, these types of aluminum printed circuit boards are made from multiple layers of dielectrics, which are thermally conductive.These constructions have one or more layers of circuitry buried in the dielectric with blind vias acting as either thermal vias or signal vias. While more expensive and less efficient at transferring heat as a single layer designs, they provide a simple and effective solution for heat dissipation in more complex designs.
